A short email to your manager

U kunt morgen niet op uw werk komen, omdat uw kind ziek is. Schrijf een e-mail aan uw leidinggevende. Schrijf:

  • waarom u niet komt
  • hoe lang u denkt dat u thuis blijft
  • wie uw werk morgen doet

The first kind of task in the exam: a short, practical text. Answer every bullet, keep it formal but simple.

Beste meneer De Boer, Mijn dochter is vandaag ziek geworden. Ze heeft koorts en moet thuis blijven. Daarom kan ik morgen helaas niet naar mijn werk komen. Ik denk dat ik één of twee dagen thuis moet blijven. Woensdag hoop ik weer aanwezig te zijn. Mijn collega Jansen neemt mijn planning voor morgen over. An opinion letter to the gemeente

De gemeente wil de speelplaats in uw straat veranderen in een parkeerplaats. Schrijf een brief aan de gemeente. Geef uw mening met minimaal twee argumenten, en doe een voorstel.

The medium-length task: your opinion, with arguments and a suggestion. Paragraphs do the work: what you write about, argument one, argument two, your proposal.

Geachte heer, mevrouw, Ik schrijf u over het plan om de speelplaats in de Van Osstraat te veranderen in een parkeerplaats. Ik ben het hier niet mee eens en ik leg graag uit waarom. Ten eerste is deze speelplaats de enige veilige plek in onze buurt waar kinderen buiten kunnen spelen. De andere speeltuin is twintig minuten lopen. Ten tweede wonen er veel jonge gezinnen in onze straat. Zij hebben deze plek echt nodig, want niet iedereen heeft een grote tuin. Ik begrijp dat er te weinig parkeerplaatsen zijn. Mijn voorstel is om parkeerplaatsen te maken aan de rand van de wijk, bij de hoofdweg, en de speelplaats te behouden. Ik hoop dat u dit plan opnieuw bekijkt. Met vriendelijke groet, Sara El Amrani

How the Schrijven B1 exam works

Schrijven B1 is the writing part of the Staatsexamen NT2, programme I. That exam is the language exam for the B1 route of the Wet inburgering 2021. You type your answers on a computer. According to staatsexamensnt2.nl the exam has four task kinds: eight sentence tasks (complete or rewrite a sentence), two partial-text tasks (fill in or finish a text), one or two short texts and one or two medium-length texts. About 12 to 14 tasks in total in 100 minutes.

Your texts are judged on task completion, clarity, vocabulary, grammar and spelling. You do not need perfect Dutch: the bar is understandable, correct-enough B1. Not sure whether you take A2 or B1? Read Which inburgering exam do I need?

Check your own text

Before you hand in a text, read it once more against this list:

  • Every bullet of the task has an answer. Count them.
  • Formal opening and closing: Geachte… / Met vriendelijke groet.
  • One idea per paragraph; signal words where they help.
  • The verb is in the right place: second place in the main sentence, last in the bijzin.
  • Verb forms and de/het words checked.
  • Spelling and punctuation read once, slowly.
