Which inburgering exam do I need?
It depends on the date your obligation started and, under the 2021 law, on the route your municipality chose with you. Check your date, then read your situation.

When did your obligation start?
Type the date. It is on your letter from DUO and in Mijn Inburgering.
Try
The 2013 law: level A2
Your obligation started between 1 January 2013 and 1 January 2022. You take the exams at level A2 or higher. Which parts you take depends on your start date.
ONA is about work in the Netherlands: a portfolio of eight assignments, then a 64-hour course or a final interview. It costs €40.
You arrange it yourself. Under this law you choose your own course and book your own exams. You can pay with a loan from DUO.
Tried hard and still stuck? After at least 600 hours of lessons, every exam taken at least three times and 2.5 years into your period, you can ask DUO for an exemption.
The 2021 law: your route
Your obligation started on or after 1 January 2022. After an intake, your municipality writes your personal plan, the PIP. It names your route and your exams.
B1 route
Most people. Prepares you for paid or volunteer work.
- Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking at B1: the Staatsexamen NT2, programme I
- KNM
- PVT and MAP
A2 instead of B1: after at least 600 hours of lessons at a school with the Blik op Werk quality mark, your municipality can let you take the language exams at A2.
Onderwijsroute
Mostly young people heading for mbo, hbo or university.
- Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking at B1 or B2
- KNM
- PVT
- A bridging programme (taalschakeltraject)
Z-route
For people for whom the B1 route or the onderwijsroute is too hard.
- No exams required, though you may take them
- At least 800 hours of Dutch and KNM lessons
- PVT, MAP and a final interview
- Asylum status holders: also at least 800 participation hours
You get a certificate from your municipality.
PVT and MAP happen at your municipality. PVT is the participation statement programme; MAP (Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie) is about work and taking part in society, and it is free.
Before you move: the exam abroad
Some people must pass the civic integration exam abroad (basisexamen inburgering buitenland) before they get an MVV visa, for example to live with a partner in the Netherlands. It is at level A1.
Passing it does not finish your integration. Once you live here, Mijn Inburgering tells you what else you need.

For study or work: Staatsexamen NT2
For work or study at mbo 3 or 4 level. It is also the language exam in the B1 route.
For work or study at hbo or university level. Universities and colleges set their own entry rules. Practise B2 with us
Anyone aged 17 or older can take it, and you do not need programme I before programme II. Both have four parts: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Details and booking at staatsexamensnt2.nl. Format, timing and fees: Staatsexamen NT2 B2 oefenen.
The official answer
Your letter from DUO and Mijn Inburgering, where you log in with DigiD, say which law and exams apply to you. Under the 2021 law, so does your PIP. This page is a guide, not a decision.
The app is free for A1 to B1 and KNM, on iPhone and Android. Online practice with timed mock exams starts at €2.99 a month. Or try 12 free KNM questions now.
